Gunda nu shaak, Gumberry sabji

Gunda is a traditional favourite of Gujarati households. Gunda is also known as Gumberry. It is called Lasoda in North India and Bhokra in Marathi. It is identified by other names too like the Indian Cherry, Bird Lime,Clammy Berries or Cordia Dichotoma. In India goonda is available summer and mostly used to make pickles. But today I will share with you a sabji recipe made from gunda.


5/7 Gundas

1/2cup bean ( gram flour)

1/2 teaspoon Red chili powder

1/4 teaspoon Turmeric powder

1/2 teaspoon Aamchur powder

Salt as per taste

1/2 teaspoon sugar

1/4 teaspoon hing ( asafoetida)

2 teaspoon oil

Coriander for garnishing


Roast the gram flour or besan till it is aromatic

Let the flour cool completely

Meanwhile ,wash the gundas and then wipe with clean towel

Break the gundas by applying pressure on it and dividing into slit halfway.

Now remove the seed of the gundas

Repeat the same procedure for all the gundas 

To the besan flour add salt ,turmeric powder ,chilli powder , amchur powder and sugar

Mix everything well and the stuffing is ready 

Stuff the deseeded gundas with the stuffing mixture

Steam the gundas for about 10 minutes 

In frying pan add 2 teaspoons of oil and 1/4 teaspoon of of asafoetida

At the stuffed gundas to it and also add the remaining stuffing mixture and mix everything well

Cover with lid and let it cook for 3 minutes on a low flame 

Switch off the flame .Do not open the lid for 10 minutes

After 10 minutes transfer the Sabji in a serving bowl

Garnish with fresh chopped coriander leaves

Serve this traditional Gujarati sabji with phulka rotis and aamras
